Efficient computation of global resolvent modes

چکیده

Resolvent analysis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations provides useful insight into dynamics transitional and turbulent flows can provide a model for dominant coherent structures within flow, particularly with large gain separation. Direct computation force response modes using singular value decomposition full resolvent matrix is feasible only simple problems; despite recent progress, cost complex remains considerable. In this paper, we propose new matrix-free method computing based on integration corresponding adjoint system in time domain. Our approach achieves an order magnitude speedup when compared to previous stepping methods by enabling all frequencies interest be computed simultaneously. Two different are presented: one transient response, providing leading fine frequency discretization; another steady-state periodic forcing, optimal suboptimal discrete set frequencies. The validated Ginzburg-Landau equation applied three dimensional flow around parabolic body.

Efficient computation of photonic crystal waveguide modes with dispersive material.

The optimization of PhC waveguides is a key issue for successfully designing PhC devices. Since this design task is computationally expensive, efficient methods are demanded. The available codes for computing photonic bands are also applied to PhC waveguides. They are reliable but not very efficient, which is even more pronounced for dispersive material. We present a method based on higher orde...

Energetic Modes in Turbulent Pipe Flow From Resolvent Analysis

We describe a method to investigate the mode shapes in turbulent pipe flow at a given wavenumber pair that are most responsive to harmonic forcing in the sense that the they correspond to the largest singular value in a Schmidt decomposition of the linear NavierStokes operator using the turbulent mean profile as the base flow. The ideas follow logically from the work of Sharma & McKeon (2009), ...

Efficient potential equation solutions for global illumination computation

The potential equation provides a natural mathematical basis for all the illumination computation methods based on the strategy of shooting light. The particle tracing technique which p h ysically simulates the particle model of light, can also be considered as a general, random walk based solution to the potential equation. As the complexity of the environment increases, the straight forward p...

Efficient Computation of PageRank

This paper discusses efficient techniques for computing PageRank, a ranking metric for hypertext documents. We show that PageRank can be computed for very large subgraphs of the web (up to hundreds of millions of nodes) on machines with limited main memory. Running-time measurements on various memory configurations are presented for PageRank computation over the 24-million-page Stanford WebBase...

Resolvent method for computations of localized defect modes of H-polarization in two-dimensional photonic crystals.

We have developed and tested a version of the resolvent (or Green's function) method, based on the shift-inverse of the Maxwellian operator, that ensures stable convergence of iterative computations of localized defect modes of H-polarization in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals. The defect states are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem for an associated compact operator with the ex...
